Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library puts books into the hands and hearts of children.
Parents or carers register their child with the Isle of Man Imagination Library and every month from birth until their fifth birthday the child will receive a book. The books will be addressed to the child and delivered to their home by Isle of Man Post.
A child enrolled from birth will build their own home library of 60 books.
Receiving a personally addressed gift in the post makes the book exciting and shows the child someone is thinking of them, while parents are gently nudged to engage in the magical world of storytelling with their child.
Imagination Library books are specially selected age-appropriate, high-quality titles.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is expanded into each new area by a local partner. We, the Isle of Man Imagination Library, are responsible for raising the funds to cover the cost of the books (plus postage & packaging).
Due to the support of The Dollywood Foundation we need to raise just £26 per year for each child under 5 years old, on the Isle of Man.
Based on the 2021 census and considering birth rate and population forecasts we have estimated that to fund books for all eligible children, we need to raise approximately £90,000 per year.
Ideally, we would like to secure sufficient funds so that every child who registers is guaranteed to 'graduate' the programme, this would require approximately £250,000 for all currently eligible children.
Our initial goal is to raise £59,000 before opening the registration system for children.
This will cover one year's costs for an expected uptake of 65% of eligible children. £59,000 would deliver 27,315 books into the hands of Manx children.
With the convenience of free books delivered right to their door, parents and caregivers are gently nudged to engage in the magical world of storytelling with their child.
As well as immediate value, studies show that Dolly Parton's Imagination Library creates a long-term return on investment, improves educational outcomes, and strengthens family and community bonds.
Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly Parton started her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county, in East Tennessee.
In the years since, it has expanded throughout the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, and Ireland. 2 million books are gifted each month and almost a quarter of a billion have been gifted in total.
The length of time that the programme has been operating and the number of children who have received books has provided ample opportunity for research to be conducted on the short and longer-term impact and benefits of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
